The lake is located in the western Dolomites on the edge of the Latemar Forest, just 20 kilometres southeast of Bolzano at 1520 m altitude in the municipality of Welschnofen. The nearest village is Karersee. The 300 m long and 140 m wide lake is fed by underground springs from the Latemar mountain range. Depth and size of the lake are noticeably seasonal and weather-dependent, the deepest point is about 22 m. In winter the lake is sometimes visited by divers who make their dives under a thick layer of ice. The small mountain lake is famous above all for its deep green water and the mountain scenery rising above the surrounding forest with the Latemar group in the south and the Rosengarten group in the northeast as background. Many South Tyrolean legends were born around the lake, and numerous painters and writers chose the scenery for their paintings or stories.

The lake can be reached via the SS 241 (Eggentaler Staatsstraße - also called Dolomitenstraße). The road to the Karerpass, which is particularly busy in summer, passes by the lake in the immediate vicinity. The lake is fenced in and its shores cannot be entered.

How to get there This family hike from Obereggen crosses the Karerwald forest to the legendary Karersee lake. Possibility to start the hike in Ega/Eggen or to do it in the opposite direction, from the Karersee lake.

The itinerary starts in the upper car park of Obereggen (1550 m) and follows trail no. 9 towards the Bewallerhof Hotel. Then follow the Templweg 8 to Lake Karersee. Possibility to take the "S" path to stop at the Häusler Sam hostel or, further on, at the Stadlalm farm (Geigerhof) via paths n°25A and n°25. Return to Lake Karersee on trail no. 8. The return to Obereggen is on trail no. 8.
