Melissani Cave is located on the east coast of the island of Kefalonia in Greece. It is located about 2 km from the city of Sami and 5 km from the city of Agia Effimia. The cavity, which contains a lake, is surrounded by forest and a mountain slope to the west. The water in the lake is brackish (water with a significantly lower salt content than the sea), it is a mixture of seawater and fresh water. The cave is located about 500 meters from the sea. The water has a maximum depth of 30 m and the water level is 36 m at the bottom of the cave. On one side the lake is open-air, on the other side it is lit by electricity.

The best time to visit the cave is in the middle of a sunny day. Boats show you the two parts of the cave separated by an island. The cave looks strangely like the cenotes of Mexico.

The cave is very popular with tourists and it is a pity because, thus, one can only stay inside for about ten minutes after paying a high price. You can also take a longer guided tour with a diving school. You can see the cave from above through a balcony that was built for this purpose.
